Sylvia in the US

In November 2023, Sylvia Kokunda presented the first-ever Indigenous Batwa-led study on solastalgia at the University of Cincinnati in the US. This paper analyses the mental health implications of climate change, a health area still given minimal attention within the health space generally, especially for Indigenous communities in Africa. During the talk, Sylvia focused on the complex layers of marginalisation Batwa communities living in South-Western Uganda in Eastern Africa face. Following their forced evictions from their forest and home, the Bwindi Impenetrable National Forest, she traced their transitions from rainforest hunter-gatherers, to landless refugees, to empowered community members through Action for Batwa Empowerment Group (ABEG) and researchers.
